2019 Honda Civic Hatchback Review
During my 2019 Honda Civic Hatchback review, I found the car to be a sporty and versatile compact that fits nicely into Honda’s family of Civic vehicles.
And, yes, Honda offers more sub-types of the Civic than some car makers have in their entire line of vehicles. Here is what’s included in Honda’s ‘family’ of Civics:
- Hatchback – four-door, rather sporty and aggressive overall design.
- Coupe – two-door, can be configured sporty or more subdued.
- Sedan – four-door, also can come sporty or a bit more relaxed.
- Type R – four-door, also a hatchback, unmistakable high-performance sports car.
In addition to the above, Honda offers a Si edition of both the Coupe and Sedan. And, BTW, in Honda’s world, Si stands for sport injected. :0)
I recently picked up a Civic Hatchback from my friends at Rock Honda and enjoyed buzzing around Southern California’s Inland Empire for a day.

2019 Honda Civic Hatchback Trims & MSRPs
So, considering the high-performing Honda Civic Type R also happens to be a hatchback. All the regular 2019 Honda Civic trim levels are going to have a naturally sporty look to them.
And here are those trim levels with starting manufacturer’s suggested retail pricing:
2019 Honda Civic Hatchback Trim Levels & starting MSRPs:
- LX $21,450
- Sport $22,250
- EX $23,750
- EX-L w/ Navigation $26,250
- Sport Touring $28,750
Since you’re reading iDriveSoCal, never-ever, worry about MSRP. That’s simply the selling price the manufacturer suggests. And I report those as a baseline reference.
Why don’t you have to worry about MSRP? First, you need to get your 2019 Honda Civic Hatchback configured to your liking.
And second, all you have to do is go see my friends at Rock Honda in the Los Angeles suburb of Fontana, California.
Tell them you checked out my 2019 Honda Civic Hatchback review and you’ll receive extra-special treatment. But they take care of everyone regardless.

Civic Hatchback Engines, Transmissions & MPG
There’s one engine for all trim levels of the 2019 Honda Civic Hatchback. And, that’s a turbocharged inline 4-cylinder.
“…it shares the same body with Honda’s high-performing Civic, the Type R… and the Type R is compared to Porsches, Ferrari’s and Lamborghini’s!”
However, depending on your trim, transmission and exhaust configuration the engine’s output changes slightly.
That same turbocharged inline 4-cylinder will put out 174-horsepower with 162 pound-feet of torque. Or, it can deliver 180-horsepower and 177 lb-ft of torque.
The slightly higher performing engine is an option on the Sport trim and standard on the Sport Touring trim. And, for this review of the 2019 Honda Civic Hatchback, my friends at Rock Honda hooked me up with the fully loaded Sport Touring trim
The ’19 Honda Civic Hatchback offers two transmissions in the Sport trim. Those are either a 6-speed manual or a smooth-shifting continuously variable transmission (CVT).
“…a 6-speed manual or a smooth shifting continuously variable transmission (CVT).”
The CVT comes standard on all other trim levels. And a fun driving function to note is the available paddle shifters with the CVT in the Sport trim. Additionally, the paddle shifters are standard with the CVT transmission in the Sport Touring trim.
And, yes, during my review I enjoyed pushing the Civic a bit with the paddle shifters. :0)
Fuel Economy – MPG
The 2019 Civic Hatchback is a Honda and that means it’s very fuel-efficient. The MPG varies slightly depending on your trim, engine, and transmission configuration. But the overall MPG range will keep you on the road and away from the gas pump.
And while I don’t recall the exact number of miles I drove during my 2019 Honda Civic Hatchback review, the fuel gauge never budged from full!
For example, in the city, the Civic fuel economy rating is between 29 and 31-MPG. And on the highway, the Civic Hatchback is rated for between 36 and 40-MPG.
The Sporty 2019 Honda Civic Hatchback Exterior
So, the 2019 Honda Civic Hatchback has a naturally sporty design. For instance, it shares the same body with Honda’s high-performing Civic, the Type R! And, in some circles, the Type R is compared to Porsches, Ferrari’s and Lamborghini’s! No kidding.
The ’19 Civic Hatchback’s front end and grill are similar to the rest of its Civic siblings. Daytime LED running lights are both a safe and appealing accent.
The 2019 Honda Civic Hatchback’s profile is part of the big difference between it and the sedan and coupe Civics. So, looking at the below pic I took during my 2019 Honda Civic Hatchback review, it just looks sporty.
Sure it’s a flashy red with cool rims and low-profile tires. But the hatchback and the overall, design gives the vehicle a forward motion. Even while standing still.
And the rear end is part two of the exterior big difference in the ’19 Civic. Again in the below pic from my review, the Civic Hatchback looks like it’s wound up and sort-of ready to pounce.
Plus, a note to serious shoppers/buyers, Honda has some very cool accessories to dance up the Civic on the outside.
Many of which can take the Civic Hatchback’s sportiness to a whole new level.
And my friends at Rock Honda happen to be experts at customizing Honda’s for their customers. That’s partially due to the fact that David Latif, General Manager of Rock Honda is a huge car-guy himself. So he’s always experimenting with various vehicle configurations for the best appearance and performance.
Inside the ’19 Hatchback Civic
Sliding into Honda’s 2019 Civic Hatchback is similar to its sedan and coupe siblings as well. Below is a pic of the interior of my 2019 Civic Hatchback review. And it takes a more educated eye than mine to differentiate between Civic’s from this angle.
But again, my pals at Rock Honda set me up with a top-of-the-line Sport Touring trimmed Hatchback to review.
So I had all the whistles and bells to play with.
I find the front seats of the Civics overall exceptionally comfortable and spacious. And I’m 5’10” with rather wide shoulders.
Plus, the spaciousness continues in the backseat. For a non-luxury compact car, the Honda Civic can come very well equipped.
For instance, the test driver I reviewed even had heated backseats! And I found that impressive.
Finally, being a hatchback, there was plenty of cargo space in the rear.
For instance, you have 22.6 cubic-feet or 25.7 cu-ft in the back, depending on the trim level you go with. And when you fold the backseats down you have 46.2 cu-ft!
2019 Honda Civic Hatchback Technology
Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were also included in the 2019 Honda Civic Hatchback test driver I reviewed along with a 7-inch touchscreen on the center stack.
Plus, every Civic Hatchback includes Honda Sensing safety tech. And those features include:
- Collision mitigation braking system – automatically helps you brake.
- Road departure mitigation system – helps you stay on the road.
- Adaptive cruise control – automatically adjusts your cruising speed.
- Lane-keeping assist system – helps you stay in your lane.
Another notable tech feature of the 2019 Honda Civic Hatchback is the camera embedded in the passenger-side mirror. And what’s funny, is that I wasn’t aware of this feature prior to my 2019 Honda Civic hatchback review. So, when I took my first right and noticed a video image pop on the screen I was caught a bit off guard.
It helps you see what’s happening in your blind spot. And it automatically displays on the center stack screen when the righthand turn signal is activated.
Driving the 2019 Honda Civic Hatchback for this review was fun. It’s got plenty of pep for a compact car. And it handled great.
The paddle shifters on my Sport Touring trimmed Civic Hatchback got plenty of exercise during my evaluation. And the CVT transmission was smooth shifting both when I was driving aggressively and taking it easy.
’19 Honda Civic Hatchback Review | Top-3
Here are my Top-3 favorite aspects from my 2019 Civic Hatchback review:
- Styling – it’s a great looking compact car.
- Spaciousness – even though it’s a compact car there’s ample space inside.
- Value – the overall package is tough to resist. With all the technical content, awesome MPG, the fact that it’s a Honda… even at full MSRP it’s a great value.
